This outage lasted for about 50 minutes and put many companies using google services in a state of panic. Additionally, about 87% of the users were affected due to this outage in Google cloud. It was caused by a bug in Google’s new security feature and was quickly fixed by Google.

2. Microsoft Azure Outage In June 2018

Microsoft Azure is another popular cloud service available in the market. Along with a majority of fortune 500 companies, many government departments, retail, financial services, health care, and research centers rely on Microsoft Azure.

A large chunk of capital 500 companies also rely on Microsoft Azure cloud services. However, it faced an outage in June 2018 in Ireland due to an increase in temperature to 18 degrees Celsius in the region. The blackout was as long as 11 hours and affected many North European countries. It also gained a lot of attention from many users due to its vast customer base. It mainly affected MS Office 365 and Microsoft Azure’s customers. 

3. AWS Outage In March 2018

Amazon provides a lot of services, and it also has seen many blackouts. In March of 2018, the hosting service of Amazon blacked out and affected many benefits that are relying on Amazon Web Services at the eastern servers in Virginia.

A power outage in the region caused the servers to blackout and affected many customers who relied on Amazon web services. Its voice assistant service, Alexa, was also down due to this outage. The company faced 6-hour outages in the same year in May due to software problems.

4. AWS Outage In February 2017

Another infamous AWS blackout happened in 2017. Amazon web services faced a massive outage in February of 2017. Similar to Google, many apps relying on Amazon web services to store their data and function properly. These apps include Quora, Coursera, Slack, Docker, Medium, and Expedia. Due to an outage in the Amazon web services (AWS), many of these applications faced some problems. 

This outage lasted for four hours and cost the S&P 500 company a massive $150 Million loss. However, many other small businesses rely on Amazon web services, as well. So, the actual estimate of the loss is much higher. The cause of this outage was a mistyped command that removed more servers than intended. The company apologized to its customers and ensured that they would learn from this event to avoid future occurrences.

5. Microsoft Office Outage In January 2016

Apart from Azure. MS Office is another popular product of Microsoft, used by people all around the world. MS Office blacked out on January 18, 2016, when some people could not open their cloud-based email account for many days. 

According to Microsoft, the reason behind this blackout was a buggy software update in their system. However, Microsoft took a few attempts before fixing the outage. Hence, the problem remained there for users of Microsoft office for more than a week. Later it was fixed with an apology from Microsoft.
